Top 10 things about 2020 that ground my gears!

You know what really grinds my gears
— Family Guy

As a farewell to 2020 I thought it would be fitting to remember some of the worst days of the year. So read on for my Top 10 things about 2020 that ground my gears!

I reached the age where my brain goes from “you probably shouldn’t say that” to “what the hell, let's see what happens” quite some time ago, I could blame it on heartbreak or the world taking every opportunity to destroy my plans but to be honest I think it’s always been harbouring inside me and it just took a few years for it to come to the surface.

You could also look at my thoughts as a genius, I mean not everyone is talented enough to offer sarcasm with a smile and it allows me to legally throw my weight around and resist the urge to tape the kid's mouths shut or pack their bags for boarding school!

On some level I hope you can relate to the challenges my life throughs at me, they say – if we don’t stop to laugh at them, we’ll cry. So, do you know what really grinds my gears?

Top 10 things that ground my gears in 2020:

  1. Driving a 20-mile round trip to take my daughter to school at 9 am to return at 10.30 am when the whole year was sent into isolation. Excellent!

  2. The day I have just gotten back from a 20-mile round trip to nursery run and sat to return to work when my son's school called to tell me I needed to go pick him up as he was suffering from a headache. Another 20-mile round trip I could have avoided – let him suffer I say!

  3. One day I receive a demanding phone call to ask why my daughter was not at school and told me the extended isolation date they sent out in the email was no longer. It really ground my gears to later find out only 4 children attended the first day and 5 the next!

  4. The day I dropped the little one at nursery at 9 and picked up by 11 due to a “loose” poo (yes isn't motherhood magical) and told that the little monster could not attend for 48 hours, not only that but would require a Covid-19 test – big shock when it came back negative!

  5. Hold a Skype video meeting in the hallway so I can watch the kids play outside in the garden, balancing the laptop precariously on a stool and using the stairs as a chair. Not the most professional I've ever been!

  6. My gears were really ground the day the neighbour phoned the police for breaching Covid lockdown rules and the kids using a pothole no bigger than a dinner plate (on common land may I add) as a jump on their bikes. The short story - the Police turned up armed and ready to deal with the situation to end up warning her about wasting police time

  7. The day I found out I was a key worker and would not get 10 weeks off – have to be grateful for job security and wages though

  8. The many days the kids learnt to burn food cook, cover rooms in crumbs, the constant interruptions and endless piles of laundry and dirty pots

  9. It has frequently ground my gears getting the four tyre punctures I got this year. And four new tyres I had to buy, not to mention the inconvenience of not only having to visit the garage but the necessary reinflating in the middle of nowhere. Is someone setting me up?

  10. All holidays that were either cancelled, postponed, rebooked or in danger this year. To mention a few Italy, Portugal, London, Chessington, Turkey, and Greece – the silver lining is we still got some squeezed in and I fell in love with Cyprus.
